ṢÀǸGÓ'S MILITARY ROLE IN Ọ̀YỌ́

ṢÀǸGÓ'S MILITARY ROLE IN Ọ̀YỌ́

In the early days of Ọ̀yọ́, it was relatively peaceful. Oranmiyan the king of Ọ̀yọ́, made friends with Bariba chiefs and, married a Núpé woman, in order to secure peace with the Nupe people. But, this didn't work out, as Ọ̀yọ́ got attacked by Bàrìbà and Núpé groups repeatedly.
Peace was taken away from Ọ̀yọ́ and, Oranmiyan, a warlike prince, had to move the capital from Oko.
He returned to Ilé Ifẹ̀ and installed his son Àjàká as the king. Àjàká proved to be a weak king and, he forgave his enemies too much.
Òwu took advantage of Àjàká's weakness and, demanded that, Ọ̀yọ́ paid tributes to Òwu. The Bariba and Núpé forces overran Ọ̀yọ́ and forced Ọ̀yọ́ to pay tributes to them. The chiefs of Ọ̀yọ́ asked Àjàká to step aside and, they installed Ṣàǹgó, a warlike prince on the throne.
When Ṣàǹgó became the king, he observed that the Núpé and Bariba people had a more warlike advantage, with their calvary. So, he started purchasing more horses from Núpé.
When Olówu asked Aláàfin Ṣàǹgó to pay tributes to him, Ṣàǹgó refused. Olówu sent his army To Ọ̀yọ́. Ọ̀yọ́ army quickly ran to defend the state and, defeated Òwu army once and for all.
Ṣàǹgó moved the capital back to Oko. When the Bariba and Núpé army came attacking again, He defeated them one after the other, thereby giving him more opportunity to take over their horses. Ṣàǹgó fought so many battles and, he came out victorious in all of them.
